Elderly 'feeling pinch' during recession

It has been revealed that elderly people on the state pension are heating just one room of their homes and foregoing purchasing new clothes in order to make ends meet during the recession.
'Older and Bolder' which is a coalition of older age groups, said that many older people were only managing on a week-to-week basis. In many cases they are hanging onto 'non-essential' items such as private medical insurance and their cars, but with the worry that they might not be able to do so in the future.
Many older people are also worried about what would happen if they need nursing care in the future and how they would manage to fund that nursing care.
'Older and Bolder' consists of the following elderly care groups: Active Retirement Ireland, Age and Opportunity, Alzheimer Society of Ireland, Carers Association, Irish Hospice Foundation, Irish Senior Citizens Parliament and the Senior Help Line.
