400 waiting on hospital trolleys

The Irish Nurses and Midwives organisation have claimed that as many as 400 people are lying waiting for a bed or further treatments in A & E departments up and down the country.
The levels are rapidly approaching the 2006 levels of 485 patients which prompted health Minister Mary Harney to declare 'a state of emergency'
Labour claim that much of these 'bed blocking' incidents are due to spending cutbacks and the fact that as many as 1,000 patients currently occupying hospital beds at a cost of as much as 2,500 Euro a week, should be in nursing homes.
