Expert advises Irish to exercise to avoid disease

Exercise is essential if people want to avoid the risk of contracting chronic diseases, according to one expert. Speaking at the University of Ulster's School of Sport Studies, Professor I-Min Lee of the Harvard School of Public Health said that while many would rather not exercise, 30 minutes of physical activity a day is needed to offer health benefits in the long-term, Medicine Weekly reports. Regular exercise can help to combat the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and hypertension, as well as obesity, she explained. "You don't have to [exercise] continuously; you can do it in short bouts of perhaps ten minutes and collect it throughout the day so you have done at least 30 minutes of physical activity," Professor Lee advised. A recent Sunday Independent/Millward Brown IMS poll suggested that more than three-quarters of the Irish population believe themselves to be quite or very fit.
