Pharmacies agree to continue normal service

Members of the Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) have agreed to refrain from carrying out planned action against fees and continue normal service for now. IPU president Michael Guckian said in a statement yesterday (April 30th) that pharmacists have been advised to continue to dispense medicines on community drugs schemes as normal after discussions with the Health Service Executive led to a number of commitments being made on both sides. However, the issue has not yet been firmly resolved, Mr Guckian said, although he stated that he believed progress could be made on the matter. "I would like to thank patients for their understanding over recent weeks, which has been a very difficult time for all," he commented. It had previously been indicated that elderly people in particular could be affected by the proposed action to withdraw from the community drugs scheme, which would have impacted on those holding medical cards.
