Getting to grips with eczema

There are a number of ways in which to tackle the effects of eczema, it has been reported.

An Irish Independent article points out that although the condition "can be tough for a child or adult to cope with" it can be treated, with seeing a GP immediately recommended as an initial course of action.

However, people with particularly bad cases - which could include those in nursing home care - could find that they are referred to see a dermatologist.

Stating that cases of eczema - and hence their required treatment - differs between individuals the publication notes that sufferers will probably be given a combination of ointments, moisturisers and topical steroid creams.

These treatments should be used as directed by a doctor, as people should also look to avoid scratching their skin to stop making the condition worse.

Such advice comes following the launch of a dermatology clinic at the Bantry General Hospital in Cork last year which provides services to sufferers of eczema, psoriasis and other chronic skin conditions.
