Charity pays tribute to group of 'unsung heroes' in Clare

Volunteers who have provided computer training to over 250 older people around County Clare in the last year as part of Age Action's Getting Started programme have been honoured by the charity.
The Clare Volunteer Centre held a special reception hosted by Clare county libraries in Ennis last month to recognise the contributions towards local communities that such people make, ensuring that those with certain conditions are able to access services they previously did not understand.
Getting Started national development officer and Ennis resident Helen McQuillan said that society now embraces a "marvellous information technology age" but one that is only such if people have the skills to engage and participate.
Mayor of Clare Tony Mulcahy said the courses had a great effect on those in home care or others living independently.
He said: "In today's society it is critical that we do not leave behind a sizeable part of the population who do not have access to ICT training or equipment.
"Online communication is an integral part of everyday life for millions of people in Ireland."
Age Action aims to promote positive ageing and addresses the right of those living with Alzheimer's disease, dementia and a range of other conditions.
