A consultant physician has claimed that women in Ireland need to pay more attention to the risk posed by stroke and heart disease.

When it comes to health issues, claims the chairwoman of the foundation's council on women and cardiovascular disease Dr Kate McGarry, women are more concerned with breast cancer, when stroke and cardiovascular disease account for seven times as many deaths.

This means that a woman in Ireland dies from stroke or heart disease every two hours.

Cardiologist Dr Angie Brown adds that women also need to be educated on how the tell-tale signs of cardiovascular problems differ from those experienced by men.

"A woman may experience more vague symptoms … Unfortunately this may mean that women delay in getting to the hospital and, therefore, lose valuable time for the necessary treatment," she said.

Recent research from the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine and Graduate Studies found that a daily dose of antibiotic can lower the risk of stroke for people with diabetes.
